That special quilt top you or your relative has made deserves a special finish. With all of the machine quilted tops, why not make yours stand out with hand quilting! Done by hand, this traditional method of finishing quilts is both elegant and unique in todays world. This method takes much longer than machine quilting, but the finished look makes it worth the wait. Depending on the size and complexity of your quilt, expect it to take 5 - 12 months to complete. The quilting stitches will be approximately 7 - 9 stitches per inch for traditional quilting. Large stitch quilting is also available for a more homespun, rustic finished look. Quilting is done with 100% cotton or cotton/poly mix hand quilting thread in a complementary color unless otherwise requested by you. Certain threads will raise the cost of the quilting, depending on fibre content and the difficulty of use in hand quilting.
When choosing a quilting pattern, I evaluate the complexity of piecing and the overall feel of the quilt, as well as its intended use. If you have a specific quilting pattern in mind, please let me know. Also, if you have a specific stencil you would like me to use, please include a picture of it in your preliminary contact so price can be established.
Information I need about your quilt to write up your estimate:
- Size and pattern of quilt top.
- Intended use ~ baby quilt, display only, daily use, etc…
- Requested services (quilting only/backing/basting/binding/piecing).
- What type of quilting you are interested in (Outline, Pattern, or Heavy) - please specify pattern if you have one in mind.
- A picture of the quilt, as well as backing and binding fabric if you plan on sending them also.
- If you need it by a certain date, be sure to include that information and I will do my best to accommodate you. Please keep in mind that quality work can not be rushed and plan accordingly.
- Any other special requests, comments, questions, etc.
Information You need to know about my services:
- A 50% deposit is required when the top and backing are sent and the balance is due upon completion.
- Shipping Charges are the customers responsibility and will be added to the cost and appear on your bill.
- Once I receive your quilt top and your deposit, I will give you an estimate on the length of time it will take to complete your quilt. You will get updates as the work progresses and I will send you an invoice for the final cost of services, minus the deposit when the stitching is approximately half done.
- Final payment must be received before the completed quilt will be returned.
- I accept PayPal, certified checks, and money orders.
Hand Quilting Prices:
Hand quilting costs are calculated by the square footage of the quilt top and the complexity of the quilting involved:
A. Outline, Grid or Straight Line quilting $8.00/sq. foot
B. All over design or edge-to-edge design (Baptist fan, Clam shell, etc…) $ 9.00/sq. foot
C. Stenciled/Custom quilting designs $10.00/sq. foot
To calculate the cost of hand quilting your quilt, multiply the length (in feet) times the width (in feet) times the cost per square foot.
For example, a full size quilt 72" x 90" quilted using simple outline or straight line quilting would be 6’ X 7.5' = 45 sq.feet @ $8.00 = $360.00.
Example of Costs for hand quilting only*:
Quilt Size Appox Size Price A Price B Price C
Wall Hanging 36” x 36” $72 $81 $90
Crib 36" x 48" $96 $108 $120
Lap/Throw 48" x 72" $192 $216 $240
Twin 60" x 85" $283 $318.60 $354
Full 72" x 90" $360 $405 $450
Queen 90" x 100" $500 $562.50 $625
King 110" x 110" $672 $756.14 $840
California King 120” x x120” $800 $900 $1000
*These prices are estimates only and the actual cost of the hand quilting will be based on the actual size of the quilt top, as well as the amount and type of quilting.
Batting Material:
Batting should be at least 4” larger than your quilt top on all four sides. If you do not plan on supplying batting, it can be provided and the cost added to your bill. Choices of batting include:
Cotton ~ all sizes, low loft
Wool ~ all sizes
Bamboo Blend: 50% Bamboo/50% Cotton ~ Up to Full Size only
Cost will depend on type and size of batting chosen.
Backing Material:
The piece for the backing should be at least 8” larger than the quilt top on all four sides and 100% cotton, if possible. Please do NOT use a commercially purchased sheet for this as the weave and fabric treatment are not suitable for hand quilting. If you do not plan on supplying backing fabric, it can be provided, added to the cost and appear on your bill. All selections will be sent to you first for approval.
Basting Services:
Basting is the process of temporarily attaching the quilt top, batting, and backing in preparation for quilting. If you are not sending your quilt already basted together with thread or pins and wish for me to do it, the following amount will be added to the cost and appear on your bill:
Basting costs:
Wall Hanging ~ up to 36”x”36 $15
Crib $20
Lap/Throw $25
Twin $30
Double $35
Queen $40
King $45
California King $50
Binding Services:
Binding is what is done to finish the edges of the quilt. If you would like, for an additional fee, your quilt can be bound before it is returned to you. I use a traditional double fold binding, sewn onto the front by machine, then stitched down on the back by hand. You will need to provide additional fabric if you wish your quilt to be bound before it is returned. When I have the actual dimensions of your quilt, I will let you know exactly how much extra fabric you will need to send. If you would like to save the cost of binding and do it yourself, I will send the quilt back to you completed but unbound.
Binding costs:
Wall Hanging ~ up to 36” x 36” $30
Crib $35
Lap/Throw $40
Twin $45
Double $50
Queen $55
King $60
California King $70
Piecing Services:
Want a quilt, but unsure where to begin to make one?
Have you inherited or bought an unfinished quilt top and would love to have it finished?
Have you started a quilt top that you are now just stuck on?
It is possible to have the top finished by machine then quilted by either hand or machine. If you are sending the fabrics to finish the top, I suggest you use 100% cotton fabric only. If it is necessary to add to your fabric selection, I will do so, by sending you samples of what I plan to use for approval first, and if you agree, they will be added to your bill. Additional time will need to be allowed for the completion of the piecing before the quilting can begin. Please allow one to six months for the creation of a top, depending on the number of pieces, and difficulty of the piecing involved. The price of piecing may vary greatly, and all estimates will be sent to you for approval and a 50% deposit will be required before work begins, as with the quilting services.
Finally ~
I will work with you until we achieve a finished piece you are happy with and proud to display in your home. Constant e-mail contact, many with picture samples, will assure your complete satisfaction every step of the way. As a quilter, I will guide you, however the final decision is always yours, the customers.
